Phonemic Awareness!
Updated: May 17, 2022
Phonemic awareness is the key element in reading readiness for little humans.
What is Phonemic Awareness?
It is the ability to hear and decode sounds. That's when children begin to read.
Sometimes we wonder how to help children. We look for ways to make it fun and easy for our little humans. Elkonin boxes are one of the ways to help children with phonemic awareness. Elkonin boxes help build the foundation of phonemic awareness.
What are Elkonin boxes?
They are sound boxes used to segment words into individual sounds.
Elkonin box builds phonemic awareness and helps children visualize phonemes. These boxes are a useful method to help little learners break down words into component sounds- phonemes.

This activity makes learning fun. It is a wonderful way to develop an important pre-reading skill. Let's have a look at the details:
Supplies:
Coloured papers
Sketch pens
Activity:
Make a list of words you want to practice with your child.
Draw Elkonin boxes with ascenders and descenders, for words to fit in them.
Ask your child to say the word from the checklist, listen to the sound and write it in the elkonin box it fits in correctly.

This fun puzzle is easy to make with supplies easily available at home. The use of these boxes help children with decoding strategy and intervention.
Elkonin boxes are one of our favorite strategies. What activities do you do for phonemic awareness? I would like to hear from you.
